LA Modern Auctions Preview Day 4: Peter’s Picks

Today’s picks:

Lot 286, Arne Jacobsen, one of four "Ant" chairs

Lot 286, Arne Jacobsen, "Ant" Chairs

Lot 286, Arne Jacobsen, Dining table and 4 “Ant” chairs, $5,000 – 6,000

What once was commonly available on the resale market, the “Ant” chair and dinging table, are now increasingly becoming harder to come by.  Arne Jacobsen’s 3 legged “Ant” chair, for example could be easily found in any resale shop handling mid century modern 10 years ago.  There would have been very little difference in price between Birch veneer or Rosewood because they were so commonly seen.

In Sunday’s auction LAMA is offering a set of 4 Arne Jacobsen “ant” chairs in Rosewood with a matching Rosewood dining table.   What really makes this set extraordinary is that the finish, hardware, and structure of these pieces are in superb unused condition.  While some of Jacobsen’s designs are still available and others assuredly will be reproduced, Rosewood veneers will almost certainly never be available again in great quantities.

Lot 396, Joan Miro, Homage to Miro, $1,000 - 1,500

Lot 396, Joan Miro, Homage to Miro, $1,000 – 1,500

Joan Miro’s iconic vocabulary of bright primary colors and simple, almost childlike, compositions are instantly recognizable worldwide.  The artist was one of many School-of-Paris-trained success stories who created many original works for the Lithography process.

Miro’s lithographs were rarely made in large editions and are still somewhat plentiful on the open market – some 30 years after his death.  A great benefit to the modern collector is the ability to buy works by such a big name for relatively little capital investment.  Joan Miro’s “Homage to Miro” is a special print commissioned by the Museum of Modern Art, New York, to coincide with a landmark show of the artist’s work.  Only 150 signed copies were available and were quickly purchased or ear-marked by major donors to MoMa.

The example offered at Sunday’s auction is sold with the original receipt and by the original owner.   The condition is stunning and makes today’s pick for its incredible “wall power” for a very reasonable amount.

This is a slam dunk for a beginning collector or even the most discernable collection.
