Just In: Alberto Giacometti Pen and Ink Drawings

We have just acquired two small pen and ink drawings by Alberto Giacometti, each of a man’s head executed in the artist’s classic brooding style.  After looking at the pen drawings, the expressive nature and unique style of the sketches intrigued me. I conducted some research and found that Alberto meticulously devoted himself to the “transliteration of appearances”, and strived to find the absolute integrity of his subjects to unveil an unknown truth. While other artists were involved in the use of emotion and intuition, Alberto struggled with representing the boundless manifestation of reality. The most common objects: a chair, a table, an apple, a common face, these objects gave Alberto the most excitement, for they represented an infinite source of surprise and bewilderment. Alberto would frequently draw the face of his brother, Diego, which he said he could have drawn the same thing over and over for a thousand years and have not come close to exhausting its resources.  While the subjects of Alberto’s drawings tend to be repetitive, the familiar objects of his home and neighborhood; the drawings themselves are not. The objects of his everyday life were part of “the marvelous spectacle of reality”, but what moved him the most was the phenomenon of the human presence.  These drawings we have acquired depict Alberto’s struggle with reality, and reveal a kind of heaviness, and thus through this struggle we see his brooding style. Alberto once said, “Art interests me very much, but truth interests me infinitely more.”
