Peter Loughrey is the founder and director of LAMA, which he established in 1992. He first opened a gallery in Los Angeles in 1987. Quickly realizing that the auction field was more exciting, he changed gears and established the auction company in 1992. In 1995, he took a year off and moved to London where he enrolled in the Works of Art Course at Sotheby’s. While interning at their Vintage Car Department, he realized that California was the place to be and upon his course completion returned to Los Angeles. He has been the director ever since.
Having been in the auction business for over 18 years, Peter is considered an expert in Modern Fine Art and Design. He has written many articles and most recently was a contributor on the Case Study Houses (Taschen 2003) and Julius Shulman Modernism Rediscovered (Taschen 2007). He has been voted one of the 50 most powerful dealers in Art & Auctions “Power Issue” for both 2000 and 2001. He has been an appraiser on PBS’s Emmy winning “Antiques Road Show” for five seasons. Further, he was featured in the documentary “Sold!” which is still running on Ovation TV. In 2008 Peter led the expansion of LAMA to a 17,000 square foot gallery in Van Nuys, California.
