Today we had a really lovely phone conversation with Laddie John Dill about a coffee table that we have coming up for sale in the May 23, 2010 Modern Art & Design Auction.
Mr. Dill said that he only did these tables as special commissions. Although he was not sure of the exact number of coffee tables that he designed, he was sure that less than 10 of these were commissioned – therefore making this particular table very rare. He believes that this table was from 1994 or 1995. He called the table “sculpture that’s functional”, and said that the base could be removed and there is a bracket/mechanism to attach the top section to the wall. Also side-note: there is a glass top that goes with this and it is very important to keep them together.
In addition to this rare coffee table, we have another work by Laddie John Dill that will also be for sale in the May 23, 2010 Auction. This mixed media on plywood is estimated at $4,000 – 6,000 and is signed verso “Laddie John Dill November 1974 Venice Cal”.
Mr. Dill just sold a large piece to MoMA – and recently had a show at David Zwirner gallery : “Primary Atmospheres: Works from California 1960-70”.
